Investigational Condition List
In North America any condition that falls outside of the 14-approved indications is considered experimental or investigational. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) includes research, historical precedent and physiological rationale and other factors to guide their approval process. Internationally, many more conditions are recognized. For example, in China, over 60 conditions are treated with HBOT.
The body of research investigating hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is growing. Researchers, practitioners and clients are now able to interact via the internet and bring about a better understanding of the effects of HBOT on the human body. We are striving to make some of this evidence more accessible on this website.
The list of conditions that are showing scientific benefit from HBOT is growing. As we add to the list on our website, we will do our best to provide the evidence and allow you to make the final decision. The conditions will be grouped into categories that are purely for organizing the large number of conditions into more manageable groupings. In time, we will also try to provide the physiological rationale for treatment, much like how the UHMS does.
