Bone Conditions
Investigational Bone Conditions that may benefit from HBOT:
|
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been scientifically shown to increase collagen deposition, to promote angiogenesis and to stimulate osteoclast and osteoblast proliferation and activity. HBOT is an approved treatment for radiation damaged bone, crush injuries and certain bone infections by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS.)

Basic Bone Physiology
The basics of bone physiology, are best explained using a construction analogy. Bone has rigidity and compressive qualities from the minerals within (eg, Calcium, Magnesium, etc.) It also has tension qualities and flexibility from proteins within (eg. collagen.) The construction analogy is concrete with iron rebar within. The concrete provides compression and rigidity while the rebar provides tension and flexibility. The mineral structure of bone is capable of change, and this change is dictated by two types of cells: Osteoclasts and Osteoblasts. The collagen within bone is produced by Fibroblasts. There is a balance between the need for vasculature and the need for bone strength within bone. Blood vessels do not directly contribute to the strength of bone but they are absolutely necessary to provide nutrients and oxygen and to remove waste products.
Recent evidence shows that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can counteract the negative effect of smoking on bone healing. Also, a 2016 study showed that HBOT and platelet rich plasma had a synergistic effect on on bone grafting.
