Arthritis (Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis)
Arthritis is generally classified in two categories. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory degeneration of synovial joints (and potentially other organs) caused by autoimmune disease. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degeneration of bone and cartilage at synovial joints that can be caused by a variety of conditions including RA. Neither condition has particularly effective treatment options, many of which have serious side effects. Progressive deterioration of large synovial joints (hip and knee) often leads to joint replacement while deterioration in smaller joints (hands and feet) often results in lifelong pain and disability.
