Dental Conditions

Dental Surgeons and Periodontists can benefit from incorporating hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in their practice. Of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) approved indications, 3 categories of conditions are regularly encountered by dentists:
  • Osteomyelitis of the Jaw
  • Delayed Radiation Injury to the Jaw
  • Compromised Grafts and Flaps
UHMS approved indications are covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP) when treated in a hospital setting. In Canada, approved indications treated at a private facility like Oceanside Hyperbaric, are not covered by MSP, however, many clients prefer to stay close to home rather than travel to Vancouver for treatment. Often, treatment at our facility is less expensive than the travel and accommodation costs in Vancouver.

Investigational Conditions, or those that are not yet approved by the UHMS for reimbursement can only be treated at a private facility like Oceanside Hyperbaric. In other countries, some of these conditions are regularly treated with HBOT. The international scientific community is constantly adding to the research supporting the use of HBOT in other experimental dental conditions. Some of them are listed below:
  • Periodontitis / Peri-implantitis
  • Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ)
  • Dental Implants (in irradiated/non-irradiated bone)

Biofilms

Recent research has shown that many chronic infections have a biofilm component. This is especially relevant to chronic infections of the mouth as dental plaque is a biofilm. Osteomyelitis and Periodontitis/Periimplantitis have been shown to be biofilm infections. For more information on how HBOT can help with biofilm infections see our biofilm page.
