Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in China

The article below details the approved indications in China for hyperbaric oxygen therapy established in 2004. As of 2013 the treatment is used more broadly than before. In 2004 China had 12 emergency conditions and 48 non-emergency conditions including:

Emergency Conditions

  • acute carbon monoxide poisoning
  • gas gangrene, tetanus and other infections
  • decompression sickness
  • air embolism syndrome
  • after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • aid in the treatment of shock
  • brain edema
  • pulmonary edema 
  • crush syndrome
  • limb (finger, toe) after skin transplantation
  • drug and chemical poisoning
  • acute ischemia anoxic encephalopathy

Non-Emergency Conditions

  • toxic encephalopathy
  • sudden deafness
  • ischemic cerebrovascular disease (cerebral arteriosclerosis, transient ischemic attack, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral infarction)
  • craniocerebral injury (concussion,cerebral contusion, intracranial hematoma removal surgery, brain stem injury)
  • cerebral hemorrhage recovery
  • poor healing fractures
  • central serous retinal inflammation
  • vegetative state
  • plateau adaptation insufficiency syndrome
  • peripheral nerve injury
  • intracranial benign tumor surgery
  • periodontal disease

China has 5000 hyperbaric chambers to serve its population of 1.35 billion. That works out to a hyperbaric chamber for every 270,000 people. Many of these chambers will be large multiplace chambers capable of having multiple occupants.
