2013 Oceanside Hyperbaric Autism Case Study

"As a parent i have to say the most noticeable difference was that my child became more engaged, interactive and tried to communicate effectively. Instead of a child that appeared locked in her own world, she began to enjoy ours!"
-N.H. Jenny's Mother, Parksville
Jenny, a 3.5 year old child with ASD, underwent a block of 39 hyperbaric treatments (one missed due to illness) at 1.5 ATA. Treatments were twice a day Monday to Friday and once on Saturday and Sunday for 22 consecutive days. Pre-treatment assessments including a Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) questionnaire and an Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) were completed by a parent. Our initial impression was that at the time we met Jenny, she would be considered a mild case. Her treatment history included previous interventions including: auditory processing, speech therapy, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and socialization behavior modificaton. Some of the improvements that were reported to us include:
  • at 5 treatments Jenny started enunciating her words better
  • at 7 treatments Jenny had less fear in social situations
  • at 13 treatments Jenny had more appropriate emotional responses
  • at 16 treatments Jenny could understand and follow more complicated animated movies
  • at 19 treatments Jenny started singing and playing
  • after 25 treatments Jenny started using complex sentences rather than simple one word communication
  • family members expressed that she was a completely different child and was proving to be challenging to keep up with
Jenny experienced a rapid change in her development during the hyperbaric treatment period. It should be noted that both speech therapy and socialization behavior modification were continued during the treatment period. The two assessments were administered by the same parent before and after the hyperbaric treatment period. No training was given in the use of either questionnaire.

For a more detailed breakdown of Jenny's CARS and ATEC results see below. A 2 month follow-up confirmed persistence of improvement.

Additionally, Antoinette Smith who attended each hyperbaric session with Jenny chose to also breathe oxygen. See her testimonial here.
